Magazine Cover Introduction

1. In order to have a good magazine cover you must make sure that everything flows together. Nothing should look strange.
2. Make sure that it has lots of details on the cover to let people know whats inside and what to expect to read.
3. If the cover pops out from its background, don’t weaken it by fussing with it. You’ve probably done something courageous and deserve congratulations. Leave well enough alone.
4. Compare it to other magazine covers. Does it blend in with the rest or does it pop out? If it is a good cover it should appeal to people.
5. Decide what element is worthy of being dominant. You don't want to use too many elements becuase then it'll come out being too distracting.

Lytro Warm Up

1. When i clicked on different parts of the photo it would change the focus of it. It would always either get clear or blurry.

2. The camera allows you to take photos in a different focus and it allows you to change where the focus may be on the photo that you are going to take.

3. The photographer would have to know about all of the rules of photography. They need to use these rules to make sure that they get the best quality and get the most creative images.

4. I believe it is because no other camera will let you change where the focus is on the picture. It allows you to change the focus and make your photos look unique and creative.

Self Portraits and Portraits Part II

Tips:
1)  The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects. In some cases this means that the center of interest—the subject—is just a speck, too small to have any impact. Even when it is big enough to be decipherable, it usually carries little meaning. Viewers can sense when a subject is small because it was supposed to be and when it's small because the photographer was too shy to get close. Don't be shy. If you approach people in the right way, they'll usually be happy to have their picture made. It's up to you to break the ice and get them to cooperate. Joke around with them. Tell them why you want to make the picture. Practice with people you know so that you are comfortable; people can sense when you aren't.

2)  Think about your motivation and emotions: Blankly staring at the camera rarely gets good results. Be silly, don’t be afraid to over-act. The worst that can happen is that you fill up your memory card with useless photos; but you might also find yourself with a proper gold-nugget of a self portrait.

I like this portrait because the child is having tons of fun in this picture. He is posing for the camera and this photo just caught my eye when i was looking though a wide variety of photos.

This photo is very interesting to me. It seems like there is a lot going on in the background but my eye is still being drawn to the person that the photo is focusing on. It is very interesting and creative.

Photograpy Self Portrait
This is one of my favorite photographs becuase of the lighting they used and how the photographer edited the photo. The way they made the models features stand out looks really cool.

This photo is very interesting becuase of how the photographer made the person stand out by organizing the cd's in a circular design. It shows his personality and part of a story.

Casual Portraits

This casual portrait shows how happy this couple is together. The colors of the grass and the lighting help make the picture look better. Overall it has a very good quality to it.

This is one of my favorite pictures because of how the lockers draw attention to the model. The color of her hair and her clothes help the model pop out.

I plan on going and taking a photo of someone standing outside. I might either get someone to stand up or lean against a wall to have more of a variety. I want to shoot someone that is interesting and won't be shy in front of a camera. I will make the shot successful by making sure the ISO is really low and the shutter speed is higher to make sure that i can get the best quality. I plan on using the rule of thirds to make the photo have more of an effect.

Portraits and Self Portraits

There are many things that are required to make a good photo. You must be very original and creative. Nobody likes looking at pictures that all look the same. With portraits you must block out everything and have a main focus. The photo should have some kind of story behind it and it should catch the viewers attention. When i have the camera in my hands i want to make sure i do all of the things that i already explained in the past few sentences.

Shortlist Warm Up

Landscapes Shortlist:
This is my favorite photo because of all the different colors in the photo. The green and the blue work very well with the landscape in this picture.

Travel Shortlist:

This photo makes me feel very peaceful. People go to this place to pray and meditate and you can get the feeling of that happening in this photo. Therefore this is one of my favorite pictures because of the way it makes me feel.

Fashion Shortlist:
This photo shows lots of color and movement. The movement in this photo helps brings the picture to life. It is different from many of the other photos because she is leaping in the air and in the other photos people are just standing around. Therefore i like this picture because it's different.

Family & Friendship Shortlist:

This is my favorite photo because it shows how the girl and the mom are having lots of fun. There is a story behind this photo and it brings everything to life.

Portraits Shortlist:

Tattoos are my favorite. To me every tattoo has a meaning. Nobody is gonna put a random tattoo on them that means nothing. Therefore the way her tattoos are being displayed in this photo is really cool.

Documentary Shortlist:
This picture shows a shape of a circle which draws the eye to the photo. Out of all the photos that i saw this one caught my attention because of the shape. It is very interesting to me and thats why i like this picture.

Gardens & Plants Shortlist:
This photo shows tons of color because the sun is going through the trees and shining on the field of flowers. The lavender flowers in this photo makes everything look so beautiful.

Wildlife Shortlist:

This is one of my favorite photos because of how the environment looks with the shell and the lady bug. The blurriness in the photo helps add a nice effect to the picture.

Creative License Shortlist:

This photo is very interesting. It looks like the lady is walking on clouds and it has multiple interpritations which makes it so interesting.

Action & Movement Shortlist:

You can tell that this photo has a very fun story behind it. They are going so fast that it creates an illusion in the photo. It is also my favorite picture  because it is different from all of the other photos. None of the other photos really stood out to me.

Ethics in Fashion Photography

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
The models face was changed when they made her neck look longer, they made her neck look smaller or skinnier, they moved her eyes down, they made her eyes look bigger, they moved her hair down a little bit, and they also made her face look skinnier.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
It is not ethical to change a persons look because they should be perfect just the way they are. Nobody should need to get anything "fixed" to look beautiful. Everyone has there own beauty and it shouldn't be changed because of what someone else's opinion is on beauty.

3.Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?
Yes there are circumstances. If it was dealing with someones weight, race, or facial features it would be completely unacceptable.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
Changes that affect peoples appearance is not acceptable at all. You should never change the way someone looks because they aren't good enough. Other things like changing something on the clothing or changing something that is in the way for example: a piece of hair that is sticking up is acceptable.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
Fashion photography focuses more on being beautiful and displaying different types of clothing. Fashion photography is only focusing on fashion and on nothing else. Photojournalism is focusing on many things all around the world. You aren't limited to just one topic.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?
If you take a photo and fix just little things then it will still be ethical. But when you start changing big things then it changes the whole photo and the perspective of what people think is unethical.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

1)
A. Summarize the main points of the story in 1-4 sentences.
Many photographers have been busted for photoshopping many different images. They try to change the photos to make them look better, but instead they end up making noticable mistakes that many people are able to point out. Many photographers have gotten fired from doing this and all of there photos have been removed from the web.

B. Explain why you think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable.
Photo Editing is unethical because many of these people were not given permission to edit stuff out or add stuff in to the photo. They went behind what the real story of the photo was and made it fake. By adding something into a photo you are changing the story of what really happened and you are sending out false information that people are infering from the photos.

2)
A. This photo is very unethical because they took operas head and put it on another woman's body. They are basically saying that they didn't like the way operas body looked therefore they decided to put someone else that had a better looking body. They didn't ask her for her permission at all. They just decided that it wouldn't be noticable and nobody would ever find out.

B. This photo was the most ethical because all they did was put the pyramids a tad bit closer together to help the cover look better. They didn't mess with anyones body or face, they corrected something small and that was it. It still isn't okay that they're doing this but out of all the other photos this was the only one that didn't have a person's body of face photoshopped.

National Geographic Warm Up

2. This is my favorite photo because i love the way the eruption looks when it is floating into the sky. It looks like there is something powerful coming out of the ground because of the orange color in the photo. It seems like it has a story behind it and it isn't just some random picture that someone wanted to take.

3. I would like to go & take a photo of something on the beach, because it would be something different. There aren't very many photos of a sandy beach. Many of the photos are of something swimming in the ocean or someone surfing a wave.

Abandoned Theme Parks

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph.
The one amusement park i would like to go visit is the six flags new orleans park. The reason it was abandoned was because Huricane Katrina blew threw the city and destroyed 80% of it. Since most of it was destroyed it would be really cool to go explore and see how bad the destruction is. Most of the buildings were submerged in water for a month and i would love to see how the buildings are slowly sinking into the swamp. Nothing was removed because everyone evacuated so quickly and there was no time to protect anything. Overall it just looks like a fun place to explore.

2. Post one photo from that park. You may use the photos from the link, or you can google an entirely new photo. I would prefer to see a photo of the park in disrepair and not a photo of it when it was still operating.
3. Think of at least FIVE other unusual places you think would be of interest to photographers. List them.
1) Abandoned Airports
2) Abandoned Jails
3) Abandoned Factories
4) Old Hospitals
5) Trains, Subways, Railroads

4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work.
Many people have started documenting abandoned jails and there are many photos on google.

5. Write a paragraph about why you think that it would be fun to document that location. Tell me what interests you about that place and what kind of photos you could expect to take there.
It would be fun but also extremely creepy to take photos in an abandoned jail. It interests me because i have never been to a jail and it would be interesting to go visit one and take photos without having to deal with criminals being there. So many things happen in jail that it would be cool to go into the cells and document how it is to be stuck somewhere for a long period of time. I would be very scared and creeped out but i love exploring new places.

6. Tell me what it would take for you to go and take photos at your location. What would you need as far as equipment goes, travel plans, expenses you might encounter and what laws you would have to take into consideration to take photos at your spot.
There are many abandoned jails located all around texas. All i would need is a camera, the supplies for camera, a car, and i would only have to worry about tresspassing laws. I would have to talk to the owner of the property & convince them to let me take photos. I would definetly be able to do it all in a day and i wouldn't have to deal with staying anywhere overnight.

American Soldier Slide Show and Captions

2)
A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why?
The most powerful image for me was when he came home from being in Iraq and his family is walking out with him out of the airport. He is safe and unharmed and im sure the family is extrememly grateful that he is okay.

B. What sequence of photographs is the most powerful? Why?
I think that the basic training photographs were the most powerful because you can see that he worked his butt off. It shows all of the hardships that he had to go through in training to be a good soldier.

C. How do the images work together to tell a story?
The images work together to tell a story because it shows what he had to go through from start to finish. Every little thing that he did was photographed in order and it helps explain everything that happened to him.

3)
A.  For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?

Funny Captions! :D

Baby Jonathan trying to dig his way through the refrigerator. "If i hide in here nobody will ever find me!"

Jim the crocodile waiting for someone to entertain him. "Someone please throw something at me! i've been waiting for my afternoon snack!"

Baby Annebelle and the cat sally are having a good time sitting on the grass. "Hey! don't bite me! how many times have i told you?! im not a chew toy!!"

Cool Video

The video did a great job showing the school spirit that we have at pep rallys. You should maybe try to get more of a view of the people in the stands that way everyone could have an oppertunity to be shown in the video and not just the diamonds, band, cheerleaders, step team, etc. Nobody is gonna want to get the movie if its just limited to the people that are in organizations. Also, the photos that were put in went by way too fast. It was almost impossible to see what the pictures were showing.

Instagram Photography

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school?
I would like to do a theme on school activities. I think that the kids that stay afterschool and that spend there time committing to something instead of going home and doing nothing should be rewarded for the time that they spend.

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones?
We should open it up to regular cameras becuase the people that don't have camera phones won't be able to do anything and people that do have camera phones might not have the best camera on there phone.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?
I would want to put the mural over by the front enterance because many people walk through those doors everyday and it would be a great place to display the hard work we have put into it.

Warm Up, HDR Photography

1. What do you have to do on the camera to make this type of photo?
In order to take this type of photo you have to set the camera to the smallest ISO. You must also have high F-Stops and Shutter Speeds.

2. Look up a Canon T3 on google and tell me if it has the ability to shoot bracketed photos?
Yes the Canon T3 is able to shoot bracketed photos. You must use the feature "Auto Exposure Bracketing" to get the photos.

3. Is there a place on campus we could take a series of photos like this?
Yes. There are very many places we could take a series of photos like this because our school has a lot of landscape. We could easily take a series of photos in the courtyard because of the trees, grass, and the big open space.

4. Do a google image search for HDR photos and find your favorite, post it on your blog, tell me why you picked that photo and then tell me what techniques (rules of photography) the photographer used.

I love this photo because of the way the light in the sky looks. The water looks so glossy and it almost looks like glass which makes it look like an allusion. The technique the photographer started using was to take 5 exposures but still keep using the autobraketing. On the camera he used the exposure compensation to take a -4, -2, 0 and then crank the exposer compensation up to 0, 2, 4.

Fixed Photo Shoot Post Reflection

1. What did you learn about the camera when you took these photos?
I learned about how to use ISO and Shutter Speed to make the quality of my photo better. I also learned what ISO and what Shutter Speed to use when i am in different environments.

2.What do you notice about all the photos and the way they look?
Most of the photos are either way too bright or too dark. They look too bright and dark because when you change the shutter speed it only allows a certain amount of light to go into the camera, therefore it either comes out super bright to where you can't see anything at all or super dark where everything looks black.

3. Can you tell the difference between each ISO? Explain how.
Yes. You can tell the difference between each ISO because when you look at the picture if you see a smaller grain then that means that you are using a lower ISO number. But if the photo looks very sharp (ex: action photos) then you are using a higher ISO number.

4. What does this tell you about ISOs and what it does when you change it when you take pictures.
ISO changes how sensitive the photo is to light. When you change the ISO it changes how grainy & how sharp the photo looks. The higher the number the faster the shutter speed & the sharper the image. The lower the number the more pixelated it looks & the slower the shutter speed is.

5. What about focus? Can you see a difference in the photos? Tell me what differences and similarities you see.Yes, you are able to tell the difference of the focus in the photos. When you look in the background with pictures that have a high ISO and a high Shutter Speed you are able to see people walking and they look very blurry. But with pictures that have a low ISO and a low Shutter Speed the images in the background look very sharp.

6. Post the best photo you took on your blog. Make sure to label the following things: ISO, Shutter Speed, F-stop, Distance, Focal Length, Lighting.

7. What do you need to concentrate on when you go out to shoot next time when you have to shoot in Manual setting?
I need to concentrate on where my environment is that way i don't use the wrong ISO & shutter speed. That is basically the only thing that i need to work on.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 3

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them?
-- When i was looking at the pictures i saw a lot of life in all of them. In the sports action photo he captured the action perfectly. Just the way he perfected every photo was amazing to me.

2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.

I see in one photo many people nicely dressed ballroom dancing. I would assume that they are at a nice fancy party since so many people are in the photo. In the second photo i see a few woman walking down the street & it looks like they have been shopping. They are dressed very nicely while everyone else on the side is in regular t-shirts and shorts. You can also tell that it is a very busy street since there are multiple people sitting on the sides.

I smell in the first photo if i was there i think that i would smell perfume and calogne due to the fact that everyone is dressed up so nicely. In the second photo it would probably smell like trash and car exhaust because they are walking down a very busy street with buses and cars driving by. I would also smell whatever trees or flowers are around.

I hear in the first photo i would hear music playing, because not very many people dance to silence. I would also hear people talking to their partners trying to make small talk with them.
In the second photo i would probably hear the bus and the cars driving down the street. I would also assume that i would hear peoples voices since they are walking around in public.

I would assume that i would taste fruit punch and wine. I would assume that they had wine for the adults and fruit punch for people that don't drink wine. Those are the most two common things that they have a party's. In the second photo i would probably taste the air with pollution in it because they are walking down a busy public street. It is very difficult to have a taste especially when people are outside because the air doesn't really taste like anything at all.

In the first photo i would feel beautiful silky dresses and nice ironed tuexdos. I would also be able to feel many different patterned high heels and nice shiny smooth black shoes. I would also feel many of the round pearl necklaces and earrings that are around there necks. In the second photo the ground would be rough and dirty. The peoples clothes would feel clean and soft. The bench off to the side would feel rough also.

Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO

Aperture!
1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture? The Eye. (Pupil, Iris, Cornea, and the Retina)

2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture _the higher the Aperture focus_, the higher the Aperture _the smaller the Aperture focus_.

3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?
A bigger F-number will bring the background objects in focus. A smaller F-Number will do the opposite. It will make the background objects blurry and it will make the main object look sharp.

4.With the camera near you - tell me the F stops available on the lens currently attached.
 From 5.6 to 36.

Shutter Speed!
 Slow shutter speed:

Fast Shutter Speed:

1.
1. A) dunking booth- Higher Shutter Speed
2. B) the food eating contest- Slower Shutter Speed
3. C.) the rock climbing wall- Slower Shutter Speed
4. D.) someone working at a booth- Slow Shutter Speed
5. E.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle- Higher Shutter Speed
6. F.) the Diamonds performance- Higher Shutter Speed

2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed
"Aperture Priority"-  A setting that allows the us to choose a specific aperture value while the camera chooses a shutter speed to match.
"Shutter Priority"- a setting that allows us to choose a shutter speed while the camera adjusts the aperture.
"Manual"- Where you have to set both shutter speed and aperture manually.

3.

ISO!

San Francisco Fort Point ballerina dancer photo shoot with Joanna Chan by Bui Photography.
ISO 200

ISO 6400
  1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?
--By increasing the ISO it allows you to get a freeze motion  of the image.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
--When there is plenty of light you should use the lowest ISO. Also use the lowest ISO to retain the most detail and to have the highest image quality.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?
--You should always use high ISO when there is not enough light for a camera to quickly capture a motion. You should also use it when you need to get ultra-fast shots.
4. At the camera near you, please tell me what ISO's are available on your camera?

Africa- Black and White

1. Post your reactions:
I think that he did an amazing job capturing those animals. Everything looked so clear and well thought out. I think it was awesome that he was able to capture each animal standing still and not moving.

2. What was your favorite photo? Describe it and tell me why its your favorite.
My favorite photo was the very first picture on the powerpoint. The elephant is standing at a watering hole and he is drinking water. The picture is very interesting and the angle where he got the elephant at was amazing. The fact that he was not using a zoom lens was awesome.

3. Look up the photographer –
a.     What kind of camera did he use? Pentax 67II
b.     What is his reason for taking the photos? He wanted to do a trilogy of books to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa.
c.     What is his hope by taking these types of photos?
d.     Find something he has to say about Africa and post the quote on your blog

Academic Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you? I encountered many challanges because many people were distracted by us taking photos and they would try to pose for the camera even after we told them not to. It was also very hard because many people were up moving around and you only had one chance to take the photo and if it didn't come out right you would have to come up with a new idea of something else to shoot.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
I mostly focused on framing the picture correctly during this shoot. Because it was difficult to shoot people moving around constantly I wasn't able to focus on any other technical aspects.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
If i could do the assignment again i think i would try shooting at different angles and not be so limited with all of my photos and have more of a variety to choose from.

4. What things would you do the same?
I would keep all of my same ideas for each of the rules.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
I believe that the easiest rule to achieve was framing. Classrooms are filled with chalk boards, colorful borders, and papers all over the wall. I thought that framing was going to be the hardest but most of the pictures i took all could of represented framing perfectly.

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
The hardest rule to capture for me was lines, because most of the classrooms that we went into had there desks sort of clumped up together instead of in straight lines.

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
The only rule that i've had trouble with was balance. In order to figure out what the rule is i could easily go back to the website that is posted on the blog and read it over again.

Balance

How well did you follow the rule?
I believe that i had a hard time capturing this rule because the teacher kept moving so much and i could not get a picture of her standing up straight.
What is the subject?
The subject of this photo is the students sitting in the desk learning while the teacher is helping them with the work.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?I don't believe that the subject is clear because there are multiple distracting things going on in this photo and it is hard to concentrate on one thing.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?
I believe that i could of not cut of the guy in the right side of the photo and i could of maybe got a little bit closer to show that the teacher is the odd shape in the middle and the people in the desks are basically framing her.

Simplicity

How well did you follow the rule?
I had a little bit of trouble trying to capture this photo because most people had there walls covered with colorful work that would of been distracting in the background. I feel like i could of done a better job at following this rule.
What is the subject?
The subject of this photo is the man looking down at his papers.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?
I believe that the subject is clear because there is not much else going on in the photo besides the man leaning down looking at his papers.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?
If i could go back and do something differently I would go back and zoom in a little bit closer to the man. I feel like the wires in the background make sort of a V shape that i distracting my eye from the subject.

Framing

How well did you follow the rule?
I also believe that i did really good capturing the rule in this photo. The blackboard is framing the man that is erasing the board.
What is the subject?
The subject in this photo is the man at the blackboard.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?
I believe that people might get confused about what the subject is because you can see the students in the bottom of the picture and it might distract some people from the real subject.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?
I believe that i did follow the rule well but if i could i would get up closer to the subject that way people don't get confused with what the subject is.

Merger

How well did you follow the rule?I think that i did awesome following this rule because there are actually two mergers in this photo. The girl with the pink backpack and the guy on the right hand side, his body is cut off. This was definetly the easiest photo to take.
What is the subject?
The subject is the students walking in the hallway going to class.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?
Yes, i believe that the subject in this photo is very clear.

Lines

How well did you follow the rule?
I believe that this photo could of been better but i also believe that i did okay with this rule.
 What is the subject?
The subject in this photo are the people sitting in the desks that create the allusion of a straight line.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?
I think that it is pretty clear as to what the subject is. Most of this picture involves the people sitting in the desks facing forward.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?I could of gotten the picture from the very back middle of the room that way you could see more lines from the desks. I also could of gotten lower and the photo would of been a lot better.
