Topic: School Uniforms

I would interview the school board president, a principal at one of the local schools, and an active member of the school board.

20 Questions:
1. What caused you to think about requiring students to wear uniforms to schools?
2. How strict are the uniform requirements going to be?
3.  Do you believe that uniforms are going to help improve students performance?
4. Do you believe that school uniforms are going to put a financial strain on parents?
5. When do you believe the school uniform rules are going to start?
6. How do you think students are going to react to this idea?
7. Do you believe that by forcing students to wear uniforms you are taking away their "creativity?"
8. How do you think the students' parents are going to react to the new rules?
9. Do you think that uniforms are going to decrease gang activity in schools?
10. What will the punishments be for students that don't follow the uniform rules?
11. Are boys and girls going to wear the same types of uniforms or are girls going to be allowed to wear dresses and skirts?

Touching Strangers

1. What do you think about this project and photo essay?I think that this project was interesting because most people dont feel comfortable posing and touching another person they dont know. It was extremely interesting to see how the strangers decided to pose with each other and where on the other persons body they decided to touch.

2. What would you do if someone approached you with a camera and asked you to participate in a photo shoot and then asked you to touch a stranger?
If someone approached me and asked me to take a picture touching a stranger I would probably do it but I would be uncomfortable. Whenever i interact with new people im always cautious because you don't know what some people are capable of.

3. Think of an unusual photo shoot similar to this one that you think would be fun to go and shoot.Another unusual photo shoot that i would think is fun would be to have little kids stand around in a circle and find a place to touch eachother. Little kids aren't as timid as adults are, they are willing to do anything you ask them too.

4. Finally, tell me what you thought of the photography, did the photographer think about the rules of photography that you know about? What types of photos did he take?
The photographer took very simple photos. He mainly used simplicity to keep your attention on the people in the photos instead of something else in the background.

Top:
Flag- Name of paper. Ex: Austin American Statesman.
Teaser- What is inside the newspaper. Some have photos, some do not.
Folio- Info. about city, school, etc. to give people more info. about it.

Headlines- one per page (minimum). explains what the first paragraph is about.
Subheadline- more info. about the paragraph.
Bi-line: who wrote the story. (postition)

Pictures- Must have a dominant photo.
Captions- 3 parts; caption head, caption, name of photographer.
sentence one tells you what is going on in the photo; "who? what? when? where? how? why?"
sentence two, background info. that you cant get from the photo. If more than 2 sentences you always include more background info or use a quote.
Front page should have about 3 to 5 stories!
Jump- where a story continues on a different page.
info. graphics- give info. in graphic form. Additional info. that supports the story. Must be in graphic form. (pie, bar, scatterplot, etc.)

3 Things that should be in every newspaper!
Volume Number, Table of Contents, Issue Number

Staff Box- organizations, editorial policy, and staff members.

Sports/Action Shoot

Photo 1:

 On an early Wednesday morning, freshman Mark Vallejo runs through an empty field to train for the "fastest runner" competition. Akins high school seniors host this big event every year to help raise money for their senior class prom.

Mark Vallejo is shown sprinting and showing his stride as he makes his way across the Akins High School football field. On Friday afternoon Mark will be competing with many other guys in the "fastest runner" competition.

This white SUV zoomed down Old San Antonio road yesterday as the heavy rains began to move in. Old San Antonio road has been known to flood very often during heavy rains.

Besides the blurriness this is where the "fastest runner" competition will be held. Many of the boys are training extra hard afterschool to make sure they come out as the "top dog" in this competition.

Caption and Evaluation Practice

Caption Practice:

Who: Terrorist
What: lights bottle on fire to show anger
When: Yesterday
Where: Iraq
Why: an attack on Iraq made this terrorist angry
How: the war with Iraq is causing this terrorist to become angry and want to get revenge on American troops.

Caption: Local attacks on Iraq cause a terrorist to show his anger by lighting a plastic bottle on fire and throwing it at troops. The war in Iraq has caused many locals to lose their lives causing people to become angry and seek revenge.


Evaluation Practice:

Photo 2: This photo displays background and cropping. It displays background because your attention is on the person. The background is just one plain color and it is not distracting the eye from the subject. It also displays cropping because all of the "background noise" is gone and the subject is getting all of the viewer's undivided attention.

Photo 3: This photo is displaying depth and a little bit of leading lines. Depth is displayed because the hills are overlapping each other. Also, the horses are shown in the foreground of the photo which helps show depth. Leading lines is shown a little bit in this photo because the dirt roads are going through the scene and coming towards the viewer's eye.

Japanese Earthquake

Looking at this photo it makes everything that happened in Japan seem so horrible. This photo really shows how badly the houses in Japan were damaged because this photo of the two children were just thrown out of someones house so easily by the earthquake and tsunami. The photographer made sure that he used the rule of thirds by making sure that the photo of the children was in the left hand side of this picture. The lighting effect really helped bring the focus to the picture of the two children.

This photo of cargo containers shows how easy it was for the earthquake and tsunami to completely destroy part of Japan. This picture is very powerful because the entire town is just a huge mess completely filled with all of these cargo containers. The photographer used the patterns rule because there is nothing else in this picture except for the cargo containers. It really makes this picture pop out with all of the different colors of the cargo containers.

This photograph shows the complete destruction of the town in Japan. This burning factory really explains how bad it was in Japan after this disaster. Looking at this photo really makes me feel bad for the Japanese people and it shows that they are strong people because they choose to stick around and rebuild the community. This photographer used the rule of thirds to emphasize the burning factory. The smoke was so heavy that it sort of helps frame the photo.
